With Fortnite Battle Royale burning up the charts, folks might be forgiven for forgetting the original Fortnite. That team-based horde-style mode is still in the game under the Save The World moniker. While Save the World and Battle Royale are different modes in a single game, some players only play one of the modes. When it comes to Save the World-only players, they're starting to feel like Epic Games has left them behind.
The point of contention here is the Valentine's Day update for Fortnite. The Valentine's Day content patch released for Fortnite Battle Royale last week with Patch 2.4.2, offering a unique crossbow and two Valentine's-themed skins. Unfortunately, while today is Valentine's Day, Save the World has yet to receive its content update, despite being the paid version of Fortnite. (Yeah, you need to buy a Founder's Pack to access Save the World.)
Save the World players are unhappy with the lack of communication from Epic Games on the matter. As of yesterday, they only knew that the patch would not be coming on Valentine's Day. Epic Games finally updated the community today with a release date for the patch, which is coming tomorrow.
"Our v.2.5.0 update will release tomorrow, we apologize for the poor communication around this release and the delay of the patch! When we have more info on when the update will land, we'll drop those details," Epic Games said on the Fortnite subreddit a few hours ago.
Fans aren't happy about the delay or the lack of communication. Worse, many are pointing to Epic Games' recent shut down of Paragon and wondering if Save the World will be next.
"Try buying the [Ultimate Edition Founder's Pack] of this game over a year ago and watching as week after week [Battle Royale] is made better, gets [quality-of-life] improvements, constant patching, constant communication and we get... one patch. And nothing else," said Reddit user Mdogg2005. "To be honest, and I hate saying this, the best I am hoping for with [Save the World] is that when they do inevitably shut it down we at least get full refunds like they did with Paragon."
"I'd say that anyone that purchased the Founder's Editions or higher prior to the announcement of Battle Royale (which you gave away for free) bought it so we could explore the Save the World half of the game. If I'm honest, I appreciate that you've got a new game mode you're fleshing out, but it's kind of insulting that so much emphasis is being placed on the free part of the game, and the paid part of the game gets little bits here and there. Even if the plans are to make it bigger and better in the future, it feels like it needs a bigger team and more focus," said Fortnite forum member Taegrr.
Save the World players have been asking for updates to the later Save the World zones, Canny Valley and Twine Peaks. They've also been wanting some of the additions that have come to Battle Royale, including costumes, weapons, dances, and emotes. The discontent has led the Fortnite subreddit moderators to put up a rant Megathread for the lack of updates today.
It's clear the Fortnite: Save the World needs another design pass to clean up some issues and some more love in the form of additional content. It's also clear that Fortnite Battle Royale is where the heat is in terms of player response and retention. That said, the Save the World community still exists and Epic Games would do them a disservice to not give them as much love as the free-to-play side of the game.
